1. What is Maths-Whizz?

Maths-Whizz is a subscription-based mathematics tutoring platform for primary and secondary schools and home use developed by Whizz Education, covering ages 5 to 13. It is designed to give personalised individual online maths tuition through the use of adaptive AI leading to improved academic achievement. The platform is intended to be deployed as part of the mathematics provision alongside class teaching by a human teacher or can be used in a home learning context. Students can personalise features of the learning environment which is a cartoon game style learning space. The platform is available in a number of countries and in the UK is aligned to the National Curriculum.

2. How can Maths-Whizz make learning more personalized?

Students can personalise their own representation in avatar form within the platform’s game environment and can choose a context that most appeals to them. They receive feedback from the virtual tutor which is also represented cartoon style. The Maths-Whizz Suite is made up of three elements that work together to support students. These are the AI driven virtual tutor, the in-depth assessment and reporting tools and a bank of educational resources. These include over a thousand interactive lessons and worksheets, animations intended for the teacher to use and more than three thousand hours of teaching content. Teachers are able to search and select these resources for example to create a test worksheet.

The platform uses data from the student’s performance to personalise the next sequence of activity that they undertake in the platform. The programming takes into account factors beyond simple repetition if further practice or tutoring is needed, and students can choose to omit parts of a lesson if the tutor detects that they are ready to move on, so that there is a balance between structured and autonomous learning.

3. What to consider when implementing Maths-Whizz?

Features available within the platform include real time reporting on students’ progress. Based on research by Whizz Education the platform claims on average 18 months increase in attainment by students using Maths-Whizz for 45-60 minutes per week in the first year of use. Three different levels of school subscription are currently available depending on how the service and options will be implemented (for example in an individual class or part of a school, across a whole school or department, across a multi-school partnership). There are currently monthly or annual subscriptions available for home use after an initial free trial period.
