1. What is Mathspace?
Mathspace is an adaptive learning system. Students access progressive curriculum-aligned digital textbooks with adaptive workbooks for them to demonstrate their understanding of the topics taught. The system can generate student reports on progress, give actionable insights and allow real-time monitoring of activity. Teachers can assign tasks and are freed from time marking by the automatic marking that is possible by the system. This may allow more time for individual support to students.
2. How can Mathspace make learning more personalized?
Students can receive scaffolded hints as part of the immediate feedback. Because of the support available through videos, hints and continuous feedback they may feel more able to learn from mistakes and develop a positive mindset regarding mathematics. The recently introduced continuous assessment tool ‘Waypoints’ is built on a mathematics knowledge network rather than simple linear model of progression. Students may perceive the adaptive check-ins which are part of the system as low stakes. After 10 of these check-ins a student has access to an ‘I can..’ skills report which is specific to them as an individual, and next steps are driven by the student. Teachers are able to view the data in a variety of ways to support the interventions that they may make.
3. What to consider when implementing Mathspace?
Mathspace contains over 14000 videos, 60,000 plus interactive questions, over 600 textbooks and 292,000 step by step hints. Apps are available for Apple and Google play. Professional development for teachers is provided within the platform in a range of ways including recorded webinars for instance to support blended learning using Mathspace.
From a student perspective the platform builds confidence so that students are able to learn from their mistakes. It can give progress checks to show students that they are on track and offers hints and next step support as students work on problems. The platform continues to test for understanding of content two years below and one year above the student’s level.
Video lessons created by teachers support the program. Real time activity reports allow teachers to monitor student performance and identify students who are struggling. Tasks can be assigned in advance by teachers and automatic grading can save teacher marking time.
